ICAN stands with Congresswoman Haley Stevens for confronting Jew-hatred and putting principle ahead of party pressure.
ICAN stands with Congresswoman Haley Stevens. She was right to confront antisemitism, more appropriately referred to as Jew-hatred, and she is right to put principle ahead of party pressure.
In her November 2 statement, The Decisions We Make, Stevens wrote: “Loyalty to a party should never require abandoning your values or judgment.” ICAN agrees. Confronting Jew-hatred requires leaders willing to uphold that principle when their own coalition makes it difficult.
The backlash exposes a glaring double standard. An outside PAC promoted Abdul El-Sayed by telling Michigan families that support for Israel was taking groceries off their tables. Stevens demanded accountability. The response from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer was to condemn her endorsement.
Chuck Schumer called her endorsement of Mike Rogers a “despicable betrayal.” Where was that urgency when Israel was being scapegoated for Americans’ economic hardship?
ICAN’s pro-America, pro-Israel agenda rests on clear commitments, including combating Jew-hatred, strengthening the U.S.–Israel alliance, and holding elected officials accountable. Those commitments must mean something even when political pressure makes them inconvenient.
The rise of Jew-hatred demands a response from all Americans. No party should demand that its supporters tolerate antisemitic scapegoating to preserve a coalition. No leader should treat Americans’ concerns about Jew-hatred as an obstacle to winning their votes.
The U.S.–Israel alliance advances American interests and Israel’s security. Leaders should defend that partnership and challenge rhetoric that turns our ally into a scapegoat for hardship at home.
Haley Stevens drew a line. ICAN stands with her.
