ICAN endorses Michael Frerichs for Illinois State Treasurer

A decade of Israel Bonds investment and continued resolve under pressure underpin ICAN’s endorsement.

The Israeli-American Civic Action Network (ICAN) endorses Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs for reelection, citing his decade-long Israel Bonds record, his immediate action after the October 7 attacks, and his continued defense of Illinois investment in Israel.

Frerichs has invested in Israel Bonds throughout his tenure. By August 2018, his office reported $70 million in cumulative purchases since 2015. In February 2026, the Treasurer’s Office reported a $100 million Israel Bonds position, approximately one-fourth of one percent of the state investment portfolio.

After Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, Frerichs moved beyond statements. His office announced an additional $10 million purchase on October 12 and another $20 million on November 2. He called the first purchase a direct response to the attack, affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself from terrorism, and said Illinois would stand with Israel through action as well as words.

He sustained that commitment as political pressure intensified. His office renewed $15 million in February 2025, purchased another $10 million in March 2025, and renewed $15 million in February 2026. In May 2026, Frerichs again defended the investments as serving Illinois taxpayers through return, capital preservation, and diversification.

For ICAN, this is the record that matters: consistent support, concrete state action, and resolve under pressure. State treasurers can strengthen the U.S.–Israel alliance through lawful investment decisions and can reject campaigns seeking to isolate Israel. Frerichs has used the authority of his office to do both.

Frerichs was first elected Illinois State Treasurer in 2014 and is seeking a fourth term. He previously served in the Illinois Senate and as Champaign County auditor.

ICAN urges Illinois voters to reelect Michael Frerichs as State Treasurer on November 3, 2026.
