Stop Anti-Israel Divestment in Massachusetts

Why This Matters

  • H.2984 mandates pension divestment from companies supplying defense equipment to Israel — singling out our democratic ally under attack from Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.

  • Israel is being uniquely targeted—no similar standards apply to any other U.S. ally, making this bill discriminatory and politically motivated.

  • Massachusetts pensions at risk—this bill could destabilize portfolios managed for teachers, police, firefighters, and other public servants.

  • Undermines U.S.-Israel defense ties—threatens decades of bipartisan cooperation vital to U.S. and Israeli security.

  • Sets a dangerous precedent—opens the door for more anti-Israel state-level legislation nationwide.

  • Massachusetts taxpayers and retirees shouldn’t be forced to fund a political agenda that weakens America’s closest Middle East ally.

Background

Massachusetts legislators are pushing a discriminatory bill (H.2984) that would force state pension funds to divest from companies providing defense equipment to Israel – our democratic ally facing unprecedented security threats from Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.

This misguided legislation, sponsored by Rep. Erika Uyterhoeven, singles out Israel among all U.S. allies for punitive economic treatment. It would require the Massachusetts Pension Reserves Investment Management Board to divest within just 60 days, potentially disrupting carefully managed investment portfolios and harming returns for teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants.

The bill undermines decades of bipartisan U.S.-Israel defense cooperation that has strengthened both nations’ security. It sends a dangerous message that Massachusetts stands against Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism and existential threats. This precedent could encourage similar anti-Israel measures across the country, further isolating our most reliable Middle East ally.

Massachusetts pensioners shouldn’t be forced to subsidize an anti-Israel political agenda that weakens American security interests. Join ICAN and our coalition partners in opposing this harmful measure. Contact your state representatives today and tell them to vote NO on H.2984.
