The Israeli-American Civic Action Network (ICAN) strongly opposes the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. These actions represent a deeply flawed and politicized use of international legal mechanisms, targeting a democratic nation for its legitimate efforts to defend its citizens against terrorism.
Israel’s actions must be understood within the context of its right and obligation to protect its population from ongoing attacks by Hamas—a recognized terrorist organization that has repeatedly and deliberately targeted civilians. By issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leaders while failing to hold Hamas accountable for its well-documented war crimes, the ICC undermines its own legitimacy and credibility.
We do not believe the ICC has demonstrated an ability to play a constructive or impartial role in addressing global conflicts. Its actions in this case exemplify a broader pattern of disproportionate focus on Israel, which diverts attention from addressing egregious violations of human rights and international law committed by other actors worldwide.
ICAN urges the United States and its allies to take decisive steps in response. We call on the Senate to pass the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, which would impose necessary safeguards against politically motivated actions targeting democratic states. These measures send a clear message that international institutions must adhere to standards of fairness and objectivity.
As Israeli-Americans and pro-Israel Americans, we remain steadfast in our support for policies that ensure Israel’s security, defend its sovereignty, and reject the misuse of international institutions to target democratic nations.
